An unexpected trip to Italy

Florence was the number one spot I’ve wanted to go to, so when the opportunity to travel to Italy arose, I jumped right on it! 12 Days spent traveling alongside the coast, from city to city, we couldn’t fathom how humid the weather could get at times. When in Salerno, I opted for a striped white top from H&M and some Zara white pants to blend in with the coastline. However, when the temperatures started to drop, we dropped by a local Starbucks (yes, Starbucks happens to be everywhere you go on the globe) to pick up a cup of coffee.

With the hot drink in hand, we were ready to face the evening chill and move on. The city is small and crowded, traffic jams were a frequent occurrence so we spent most of the day up on our feet, exploring. There was no stopping, photos needed to be taken, the beach needed visiting, I was in a hurry to absorb as much of the experience as possible.

With a friend and colleague by my side, the trip ended up being extremely fun from start to finish, so shoutout to Rivienne for being here with me through it all!

Pizza time in Naples

Next stop was Naples. Since we first arrived in Italy, we hadn’t eaten any pizza so we decided to stop by an authentic Italian restaurant and taste their best pizzas. I chose mushroom and salami pizza. Our language barrier may have prevented us from getting acquainted with the locals; however, it did not stop us from pointing at our menu until the waiter got our order down.

Visiting art galleries and museums was what preoccupied us for the rest of the day and only when our feet were aching did we go back to the hotel. For such a formal day, I sported my Versace boots, a top from H&M and a pair of jeans from Calvin Klein. To complete the look, I took my black velvet Dior handbag. As comfortable as I was when the day started, by the time evening hit, I could barely stand. I still recall the gray pavements that carried me back to the hotel.

We made a few more stops before we arrived in Florence, namely: Rome, San Marino, and San Gimignano. Each one was more amazing than the last. It was at this moment when I fell completely head over heels for Italy. What a beautiful country! Rome was like entering a whole new world, filled to the brim with history. I felt like I was part of it just seeing St. Peter’s Basilica.

In San Marino, we wanted to bask in the beautiful mountainous area but also the historic old buildings. The Castle was a sight to behold, especially at night. And from San Marino, we stopped by San Gimignano. Tuscany is a beautiful area, and it would have been a crime against nature had we decided not to make a stop and enjoy the beauty it has to offer.

There is a lot of graffiti behind buildings and each one felt meaningful to me. It was as if each one was designed with a goal in mind and it wasn’t just some random scribbles by local vagrants, it was more than that. That night, when we went back to the hotel, I felt mournful over the loss of time. And in the morning, we were on a plane to go back home.

What If I Fail My Driving Test?

What If I Fail My Driving Test?

There were a million things that could have gone wrong during your driving test and sadly, something did. Unlucky for you, you just failed your driving test and you’re wondering what to do next.
The first thing is to not panic — only 40% of people pass the driving test on the first try. That means that 60% of people fail the driving test the first time they take the test.
A key thing you have to know is that if you fail the test you cannot drive away on your own and it’s required a licensed driver is with you.

The Process After The Test

If you haven’t taken the driving test yet, it’s important to understand the process you will go through after the test. When you return to the registry, your testing officer will calculate your result on the test score sheet as you wait.
After your result is ready, you’ll be called to the counter. If you passed the driving test then you’ll be congratulated with a new P1 licence that you will need to pay for.
But if you failed, the test score sheet will indicate areas of improvement and the officer will make brief comments on what you could have done better.
However, testing officers are not permitted to discuss any specific situations or events. Through the general comments, it’s important for you to draw upon the specific situations where you could have made a mistake.
If you are genuinely unsatisfied with the way the test was conducted because the test was conducted unfairly and not just because you were unhappy with the result, you have an opportunity to contact the manager of the registry who will look into the complaint and have a further discussion with necessary.

Becoming a better driver

On the other hand, it’s wise to look on the positive side of the situation — you’re able to get more practice in and you’ll be an even better driver when you do get your licence.
There are numerous ways you could have failed the driving test. The most common are:

• Disobeying traffic signs, signals or road markings
• Failing to give away when necessary
• Colliding with a vehicle, pedestrian or object
• Performing an illegal act or manoeuvre

Remember that in order to the pass the driving test you must have no more than 3 errors in the pre-drive checklist, no critical error mistakes and no more than 15 errors while driving on the road.

The Test Score Sheet

If you want to have a look at the test score sheet, look in your driver’s manual or here on page 36.
Nevertheless, if you have failed you will receive your test score sheet back with what you’ve done well and what errors you made.
Maybe you might have driven perfectly except for one critical error mistake you made because you didn’t stop at a stop sign because you were nervous or maybe you didn’t manage to reverse parallel park (link to reverse parallel parking blog) properly.
Regardless of what caused you to fail, it will be on the score sheet and it’s important to look at the score sheet and improve on it next time.

Pick the Right Car

Passing both the street driving and maneuverability tests have a lot to do with selecting the best car. Select a vehicle that

• has good visibility on the road and small blind spots.
• is small so you have more wiggle room between the orange cones.
• has an automatic transmission.
• is one you’ve practiced on and are familiar with.

Prepare the Vehicle

Do a quick check on the vehicle to ensure it’s not gonna poop out on you during the exam. Check the fuel and fluid levels, window/windshield transparency, headlights, brakes, etc. If the vehicle’s not blowing smoke or making atrocious noises, give its interior a cleaning; that way, you won’t give the examiner a bad impression when he sits down.

Arrive Early

You never know what might happen on the road. Leave from your house early and arrive at the office early to ensure you’re not frantically sprinting in. A calm, collected mind is an asset during your exam.

Don’t Allow Distractions

It should go without saying, but you need to minimize distractions during the exam–particularly those within the vehicle. You need to be focusing on the road–and showing the examiner that you are–so turn off the radio, trash the coffee cup, shut off the phone, and for goodness’ sake, don’t GoPro or Facebook Live your driver’s test.

To give yourself the best chance of passing:

1. Find the right instructor for you. Even before you start thinking about the test, find the most compatible instructor – one that you can work with and trust. Don’t be afraid to book a tester lesson too and if you are not comfortable then move on! You will be spending an average of 30 – 40 hours together so finding a good instructor will not only increase your chances of passing first time but may also reduce the amount of hours needed to reach test standard.

2. Always look for learning opportunities. As a passenger put yourself, figuratively at least, in the driving seat. At junctions or roundabouts run through your mirror, signal manoeuvre steps just as you would do during a driving test. The more you do this, the more it will become second nature to you. During the test itself, you ideally want this to be second nature.

3. ‘Show me, Tell me’ questions. Designed to test your practical knowledge, you may be asked anything from how to check if your break lights are working through to making sure your head restraint provides the best protection in the event of a crash. Read up on these scenarios and have an answer prepared for each.

4. Driving test routes. As the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) don’t publish driving test routes it always makes sense to have an understanding on what areas and roads you may be expected to navigate during your test. You can expect large and complicated roundabouts, junctions or crossroads to always be included and these can be identified by Google Maps.

5. Practice, practice and practice some more. Practicing your manoeuvres as often as you can will help you feel more comfortable when performing them in the test – especially if you are able to do these in the car which you will take your test in.

6. Revisit your theory. Knowing your signs and your highway code when on your test will greatly settle your nerves and boost your confidence – allowing you to drive in a relaxed and safe way. And, your examiner will notice.

7. Mock test. There are a number of online resources available enabling you to get plenty of practice in before the official test day. Practice tests posted by the DVSA have 50 questions whereas the live test will see you faced with 100.

8. Stay calm and don’t panic. It’s only natural to feel overwhelmed – particularly if you make a mistake, if you are not sure how to proceed, or if your mind goes blank at a crucial juncture.

9. Eat before your test. You need fuel as much as your car. By ensuring you are hydrated and nourished will, in turn, help to energise you, ensuring optimal levels of concentration and performance.

10. You are not the Examiner! Whatever you may think about your performance on the day, you must remember that the examiner owns the final opinion. This works both ways; you could feel you have failed following a mishap or lapse in concentration. Remember though, if you have addressed the issue correctly and done all you can to maintain the safety of yourself and other road users, the examiner may think that you have done everything properly, and therefore won’t fail you. Stay calm and be confident. This does not mean you can’t drive well. What you do next however will be a testament to your driving skill. Remain calm, assess the situation and take the appropriate action to remedy it. This is noted by your examiner and correctly & calmly addressing any issues is a bonus.
